Marylebone High Street Ward’s two Conservative Councillors have decided to spend £35,000 of their annual £46,000 Neighbourhood Budget on 281 Hanging Baskets.

Labour’s Nik Slingsby has attacked this decision as ‘frivolous’ at a time when roads and pavements in many parts of the area are in a poor state of repair and when the money could have been better spent on books for local school children.

Nik Slingsby said;

“It’s saddening that public money is being spent in this way and it serves to highlight the Conservatives’ frivolity and financial incompetence at a time of austerity. I would find better ways of spending this money, for example, on road and pavement repairs and books that would educate our children for the future as opposed to flowers that will only blossom briefly. “
