Westminster’s Labour Councillors have today joined calls for the Mayor of London to freeze fares at least at the rate of inflation for 2014 after it was revealed that London commuter fares have become the most expensive in the world under Boris Johnson. Under Boris Johnson, the cost of a single bus journey has increased by 56% and a zone 1-6 travel card is £440 more expensive.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group said:

“Residents across Westminster are struggling with the cost of rent and bills going through the roof. They simply can’t afford yet another inflation busting hike to the cost of transport as well.

Under Boris Johnson, the cost of a single bus journey has increased by 56% and a zone 1-6 travel card is £440 more expensive. That’s serious money to residents who have to use the bus and tube every day. To make things worse, the Mayor is also planning to close the ticket offices in station across Westminster resulting in 2,000 job losses in London.

He’s asking you to pay more while giving you a worse service. It’s the Great Tory Train Robbery and residents will not put up with it.”

Sadiq Khan MP, Shadow Minister for London said:

“The Mayor must act to ease the cost-of-living crisis that his Government has created and keep his manifesto promise of a ticket office at every station in Westminster”

Councillors are urging residents to go to http://www.GreatToryTrainRobbery.co.uk and sign a petition against fare hikes and ticket office closures in Westminster.
