Government refuses to support Pimlico residents’ pleas to save Lupus Street post office

Lupus St Alan Johnson

The Government has refused to support Pimlico residents’ call to save Lupus Street post office.

In its response to a petition from local residents presented to the Government by Mark Field MP, Business Secretary Liberal Democrat Vince Cable MP, has rejected residents’ pleas to save the post office.

First, Mr Cable has washed his hands of any responsibility for the closure proposal (“The Government note that the implementation of the Crown Transformation Programme is an operational matter which is the responsibility of senior management at Post Office Ltd”) and second, he tells elderly and disabled residents that it is OK for them to walk 20 minutes to the nearest alternative post offices (“The Government note that in the case of Lupus Street, Post Office Ltd is proposing to merge operations with the nearest alternative Crown branches at Vauxhall Bridge Road and Eccleston Street, which are within half a mile, and a mile of Lupus Street branch respectively”).

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said;

“It is extremely disappointing that the Government has rejected residents’ call to save Lupus Street post office. The closure of this post office would be a major community loss, particularly for residents on the Churchill Gardens Estate, and for the wider Pimlico area. Labour Councillors and the Churchill Ward Labour Action Team of Murad Gassanly, Jason Williams and Shamim Takluder, will continue our campaign alongside local residents and Post Office workers, to keep the post office open”

One Response to Government refuses to support Pimlico residents’ pleas to save Lupus Street post office

  1. Pauline Ramsey says:

    The arguements for the closure of Lupus Street post office are not justifiable in my opinion.
    Why would it be prudent to close down a well used public service to merge is with another already
    overused service (vauxhall bridge post office) Forget whether people can walk there or not but that
    IS a problem for many residents. Like closing hospitals for mergers ,it causes havoc and denies
    people essential services on purpose.
