Westminster Conservatives have written to Labour MP Chris Bryant (who represents the Rhondda in South Wales) to ask him to be one of their candidates at the next Council elections in May 2014.
Mr Bryant, who lives in Westminster during the week, has tweeted about his surprise invitation and the Conservatives’ failure to put a stamp on the letter. Mr Bryant replied “since I am a Labour MP I have no desire to join your party or attend your meetings. Call me old-fashioned.”
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said
“Westminster Conservatives really must be desperate for candidates if they are reduced to asking Labour MPs to stand for election next May. And they must be strapped for cash, too, if they can’t afford the price of a stamp. It looks like the cost of living crisis is really hitting home even in Tory Westminster”
Dear @clwca you have just sent me a letter asking whether I want to be a Tory candidate or join the Tory party (1) pic.twitter.com/dQFWCxN2l7
Unfortunately (a) @clwca you didn’t pay the postage so I have had to pay £1.50 4 the privilege. (2) receipt attached pic.twitter.com/GzYc9npdt8
