Westminster Conservatives are continuing their ‘social cleansing’ programme of moving low income residents from Westminster by signing a contract with a special purpose vehicle company which will provide 100 units of temporary accommodation for the Council elsewhere in London.
Labour Councillors say that this latest move will further widen the gap between the rich and the poor in Westminster, as well as transferring Westminster’s responsibilities for education and social services to outer London boroughs.
Councillor Guthrie McKie, Labour’s Housing spokesperson said;
“Here again is an attempt to dislodge Westminster residents to other parts of London. This is totally unnecessary as the Council has the land and the funding available in Westminster to build and secure housing which will deliver genuinely mixed communities. There is no mention of rent levels. If the rents are above the Council’s social rents it will mean low income residents relying on greater levels of housing benefit. This will lock those residents in to greater benefit dependency.”
