Westminster company landlords gain millions from housing benefit payments

Freedom of Information Act research undertaken by the GMB Trade Union has revealed that company landlords in Westminster, including the Duke of Westminster’s Grosvenor Estate, are making millions of pounds from housing benefit payments. The top company landlords in Westminster who receive housing benefit direct from the Council for tenants renting their properties, with the amount received by each company from Westminster Council, are;

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said;

“The real winners of the Housing Benefit system are company landlords who have made millions of pounds out of the housing crisis. The Conservatives like to demonise those living in property where the rent is paid through Housing Benefit but the truth is that families never see the huge sums paid out in rent because the money goes straight in to the bank accounts of big landlord companies, boosting their profits. This excellent GMB research finally nails the lie that the poor have benefitted from the big rise in Housing Benefit payments. We now know where all the money has really gone”

Grosvenor Estate Belgravia – Part of Grosvenor Group. Fixed assets of £4,272,300,000. Headed by the Duke of Westminster who is in the Sunday Times Rich list as 8th richest person in Britain with wealth estimated at £7.8bn. The company received £243,000 from Westminster Council.
Grainger Residential Management / PHA Ltd / Grip Nomco 1 & 2 / Grainger GenInvest LLP- £1.2m across 16 districts. Part of Grainger PLC with fixed assets of £618m, current assets of £1bn and turnover of £283m. In 2013 own 13,353 units with a market value of £1.8bn. They manage 8,216 units with market value of £953m. Nearly 20% of company held by main shareholder Schroder Investment Management Ltd. The company received £245,000 from Westminster Council.
Mantilla Ltd – 3 American directors, Kashif Sheikh, Cindy Woon and Diego Rico, all New York based. Company is registered in Jersey. The company received £219,000 from Westminster Council.
