‘Multiple restructures’ leads to £3 million increase in spending on temporary staff at Westminster Council

Westminster Conservatives have spent nearly £18 million on temporary staff this year, an increase of nearly £3 million since last year.

In 2013/14 Westminster Council spent £15.1 million on 345 temporary staff. This has increased in 2014/15 to spending of £17.92 million on 313 temporary staff – with three months of the year left.

In a report to the Audit and Performanve Committee, the Council says “this increase may be due to the multiple restructures taking place and the current restrictions on recruitment”.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“Millions of pounds of year are being wasted on very expensive ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ agency staff. The Council’s continuous round of cuts and restructuring is not only damaging staff morale and the delivery of front line services, but is costing residents a fortune. Westminster Council’s plans to ‘rearrange the deckchairs on the Titanic’ are not only leading to poorer public services but are proving very expensive for Council Tax payers”
