Westminster Conservatives break promise of “no cuts to children’s centres and play services”

Tory broken promises
Westminster Conservatives have broken their promise to residents that “there will be no closures or cuts to childrens’s centres and leisure services” made in Spring/Summer 2013.

Westminster Conservatives are planning another £550,000 cut from Children’s Centres, Play and Youth Services in 2016/17 following the £750,000 cut planned for this April onwards.

– Children’s Centres will lose another £191,000 (to be added to the £474,000 cut in 2015/16)
– Youth Services will lose another £197,000 (to be added to the £125,000 cut in 2015/16)
– Play Services will lose another £170,000 and £30,000 in 2017/18 (to be added to the £152,000 cut in 2015/16)

In total, £588,000 will be cut from Children’s Centres, Play and Youth Services in 2016/17 and 2017/18. A total of £1,339,000 will be cut over the three years from 2014/15 – 2017/18.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group, said:

“The Conservatives have broken their promises to residents and have decided to target children, young people and their parents for big cuts to front-line services. There can be no excuse for these heartless, year-on-year cuts to basic services for some of the most vulnerable Westminster residents. Labour would have saved children’s centres and play services by cutting the Council’s bloated and unneccesary spin and publicity operations which no one wants or needs and use the money saved to save these highly regarded services.”
