Childminders protest at Westminster play centre ban

QP childmindersCouncillors Rita Begum and Patricia McAllister outside Queen’s Park children’s centre with angry child minders who have been told by Westminster city council they can no longer use the drop in service.

Westminster Council has banned childminders’ children from attending ‘Stay and Play’ drop-in sessions at Children’s Centres. Following cuts to the Council’s Play service earlier this year, the Council has now written to parents to say:

“As places at Stay and Play sessions are limited we do need to prioritise children living in Westminster attending with parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles and can nPlay letter Oct 15o longer admit childcare professionals during these sessions”

This follows Westminster Conservatives decision to cut £1,339,000 from Children’s Centres, Play and Youth Services over the three years from 2014/15 – 2017/18.

It is interesting that the Council says “we do need to prioritise children living in Westminster attending with parents, grandparents… and no longer childcare professionals..”
I am a single working mother who happens to have no family in London. Due to my long working hours I have no choice but to leave my baby in the hands of a childminder.
My childminder takes my little one to Stay and Play sessions in order to help his development. Why should my baby be deprived of this services? I have no chance to take him there otherwise.
Should I leave my job and join the doll line to be able to access this services?
